Jerry Springer - The Opera
|
"It aint easy being me" Based on America's most lurid talk show, Jerry Springer - The Opera began in a series of public workshops at Battersea Arts Centre in 2001. It went on to be performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2002, before opening at the National Theatre in April 2003. It then premiered to an audience of 1200 people in the West End's Cambridge Theatre on 14th October that same year with Michael Brandon in the lead role. Full of witty storylines and including the songs Pregnant by a Transsexual, Here Come the Hookers and I Refuse to Wear Clothes, the musical, written by Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee, is enjoying sell-out performances in London's West End. The Guardian newspaper review declares it the hottest show in London, and The New York Times says it's the type of musical you thought was no longer written. Taking more than £8.5 million at the box office, the award winning musical's season at the Cambridge Theatre has been extended to October 2005, and is also set for Broadway next year, with a pre-run in San Francisco in Spring 2005. Jerry Springer - The Opera has won the accolade for Best Musical at four separate awards: The Olivier Awards, The Critics' Circle Awards, The Evening Standard Awards and The What's on Stage Awards. David, who took over the role on Monday 12th July 2004 at The Cambridge Theatre, London said he was "thrilled and excited to be joining the cast of the award-winning musical."
